Meet Alyssa Nguyen

Computer Science Sophomore

Meet Alyssa Nguyen: Welcome

How were you first introduced to STEM?

My dad is a software developer so I would say that he initially introduced me to STEM and computer science. However, technology has become such a large part of my life in the forms of TV, laptops, phones, etc. that it was natural for me to want to learn more.

What are you passionate about? What role does STEM play in your future?

It's not so much a field of study, but rather an organization. I'm currently the Co-Vice President of BCA's chapter of Girls Who Code. Empowering other girls and encouraging them to participate in the male-dominated tech field is always something I've been really passionate about, especially considering I'm one of six girls in an academy of 30 students.

As for my future, I definitely want to explore and learn more in the field of Computer Science, but I think regardless of where I end up, any knowledge of technology will help me in this tech-immersed world we live in.

Do you have a particular STEM project you are proud of?

Something that I've worked on and found really cool has been Tello Drones. I first came in contact with them at a BCA-run summer tech camp for girls. I've actually taught them at two separate events: once at BCA Flash, and once to a Girl Scout Troop at BCA Makerspace. I'll also be a Tello instructor this summer at BCA Tech Camp!

Why do you feel it is important for girls to learn about STEM?

Technology has become such a vital part of our lives that I think its a necessity to gain some knowledge. Even if you find you don't enjoy it, you can at least walk away and say that you've tried it and that you've learned something new.

What advice do you have for girls interested in learning about STEM?

Because STEM fields are for the most part, so predominately male, I think females might feel intimated due to the lack of other girls like them. I would encourage others to find a mentor or someone already involved to help them out along the way- its always easier and more fun with someone by your side. That may seem easier said than done, but the STEM field has so much to offer to boys and girls alike. Don't let your fear cause you to shy away from your interest! You'll have the opportunity to explore a new field, career interest, and find new friends!
