Through my Gold Award Project, I addressed the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields by organizing workshops that I held at my local middle school for the young girls in my community. My goal was to transform STEM lessons that I have enjoyed over my academic career to fun activities for the students so that girls that may not have access to or know much about STEM could explore it in a safe and encouraging environment. I led the girls through engaging lessons followed by corresponding activities such as block-coding, mousetrap race cars, popsicle stick catapults, and slingshot marshmallow shooters, holding friendly competitions afterward for them to test their creations. I shared safe resources that I found with the girls and encouraged them to continue practicing the STEM lessons we learned at home with their family and friends. When the workshops were over, I created this website which includes the STEM lessons I presented in class, the instructions for each activity, and additional resources for STEM. I am sharing my website with schools and libraries in Bergen County so that they can follow it and create their own workshops to encourage students in their towns.
